Fan Bingbing, born September 16, 1981, in Qingdao, Shandong, is a Chinese actress, producer, singer and businesswoman. She launched her acting career in the mid‑1990s and rose to fame in 1998 as Jinsuo in My Fair Princess, later shifting focus from television to film and exploring diverse genres. In the 2000s, Fan appeared in Fall in Love at First Sight (2002) and Battle of the Warriors (2006). She won Best Actress at the 27th Hundred Flowers Awards for Cell Phone (2003) in 2004. After founding her own studio in 2007, she became involved in producing television dramas including Rouge Snow (2008) and Memoirs of Madam Jin (2009). Her film work during this period included Lost in Beijing (2007), which competed at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival, and The Matrimony (2007), for which she won Best Supporting Actress at the 44th Golden Horse Awards. For her performance in I Am Not Madame Bovary (2016), she received several acting awards and nominations, including those from the 31st Golden Rooster Awards, the 11th Asian Film Awards and the 8th China Film Directors’ Guild Awards. From the 2010s onward, Fan Bingbing became increasingly active in international cinema, appearing at major film festivals and serving on festival juries.In 2010, Chongqing Blues (2010) competed at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival and she won Best Actress at the 23rd Tokyo International Film Festival for Buddha Mountain (2010). She served on the main competition jury of the 24th Tokyo International Film Festival in 2011. In 2016, she won Best Actress at the 64th San Sebastián International Film Festival for I Am Not Madame Bovary (2016), becoming the third Chinese-language actress to win Best Actress at two international A-category film festivals. In 2017, she featured on the Asia edition cover of Time and was listed among its 100 Most Influential People. That year, she joined the jury of the 70th Cannes Film Festival and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with lifetime Oscar voting rights. Beyond Chinese-language cinema, her international credits include Stretch (2011), My Way (2011), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), and The Lady in the Portrait (2017). In 2018, she was investigated by Chinese tax authorities over tax-related violations and was ordered to pay back taxes, late fees and fines. Afterwards, she reduced public activities in mainland China’s entertainment sector but kept working on overseas film projects. In recent years, Fan has starred in international productions, served as festival jury member and received multiple international acting honours. Her recent works include South Korean Green Night (2023), Hollywood productions The 355 (2022) and Ice Road: Vengeance (2025), Singaporean short She Said (2026), and international co-production Diary of a Mad Old Man (2026). Many of her works have been selected for major international festivals, including Busan, Toronto, and Tokyo. In 2023, she joined the main competition jury of the 71st San Sebastián International Film Festival. In 2025, she won Best Actress at the 62nd Golden Horse Awards for Malaysian film Mother Bhumi (2025) and served on the jury of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival.
